Outdoor Entertainment: How to Build the Perfect Patio Setup

Elite AV DesignsMarch 15, 20257 min read

Colorado homeowners live outside. From the first warm days in March through football season in the fall, decks, patios, and backyards become extensions of the home. But when it comes to technology, most outdoor spaces are stuck in the dark ages: a portable speaker on the railing, a phone propped on the table, and a prayer that the Wi-Fi reaches.

It does not have to be that way. We have built outdoor entertainment systems across the Denver metro area that deliver incredible audio, weatherproof video, and seamless smart home integration, all designed to handle Colorado's unique climate challenges.

Outdoor Audio Done Right

The foundation of any outdoor entertainment setup is audio. But outdoor audio is fundamentally different from indoor. There are no walls to contain and reflect sound. You are competing with wind, traffic, kids, and neighbors. And whatever you install has to survive hail, UV exposure, temperature swings from -10 to 100 degrees, and the occasional visit from a curious squirrel.

We use a combination of architectural speakers (mounted under eaves or on exterior walls) and landscape speakers (stake-mounted units that blend into garden beds). Both types are rated for outdoor use and engineered to project sound over open areas effectively. A buried subwoofer adds low-end impact without any visible equipment.

  • Landscape speakers that disappear into garden beds and planters
  • Architectural speakers for mounting under eaves or on covered patios
  • Buried subwoofers for bass response without visible equipment
  • All outdoor speakers rated IP65+ for weather and UV resistance
  • Independent volume and source control for the outdoor zone

Pro tip: For patios and decks, plan speaker placement to create even coverage across the seating area. Four smaller speakers usually outperform two large ones by eliminating hot spots and dead zones.

Outdoor TVs: Built for Daylight

Bringing a regular indoor TV outside is one of the most common mistakes we see. Standard TVs are not bright enough to compete with direct sunlight, they are not sealed against moisture, and they will fail within months of outdoor exposure. Even under a covered patio, temperature and humidity will kill a standard panel.

Purpose-built outdoor TVs from brands like Samsung's The Terrace or SunBrite solve these problems. They are three to five times brighter than indoor TVs, fully sealed against rain and dust, and rated to operate in extreme temperatures. The screens have anti-glare coatings that let you watch comfortably even when the sun is high.

For covered patio installations where the TV is protected from direct rain, there are also weatherized enclosures that let you use a high-end indoor TV at a fraction of the cost of a purpose-built outdoor display. We will help you determine which approach makes sense for your specific setup.

Lighting Sets the Mood

Great outdoor entertainment is not just about audio and video. Lighting transforms the entire experience. Low-voltage landscape lighting can highlight architectural features, illuminate pathways for safety, and create ambiance around seating and dining areas. When it is integrated with your smart home, outdoor lights can be part of automated scenes.

A "dinner party" scene might dim the landscape lights to a warm glow, bring the patio string lights to 40%, and turn on the pathway lights. An "outdoor movie" scene kills most lighting, brings up the screen, and cues the audio. One tap, and the entire outdoor environment transforms.

Wi-Fi: The Invisible Foundation

None of this works without solid outdoor Wi-Fi. Streaming audio, controlling systems from your phone, and running outdoor smart devices all depend on reliable wireless coverage. For most homes, the indoor router does not adequately cover the patio, let alone the backyard.

We install weatherproof outdoor access points (Eero, UniFi, or similar) positioned to blanket your outdoor living areas with strong signal. If you are already on a mesh network like Eero, adding an outdoor node is often straightforward. The result is the same fast, reliable Wi-Fi you have inside, extended to every corner of your property.

Pro tip: If you plan to mount an outdoor TV, run an Ethernet cable to the TV location during installation. A wired connection to the access point near the TV ensures buffer-free 4K streaming, no matter how many devices are on the network.

Designing Around Colorado Weather

Colorado's climate is unique. We get intense UV at altitude, sudden hailstorms, and 50-degree temperature swings in a single day. Every component we install outdoors is specifically rated for these conditions. Speaker cones are UV-resistant. Cable connections are weatherproofed. Equipment is housed in ventilated, weather-rated enclosures.

We also plan for seasonal use. Many of our clients want systems they can enjoy year-round, not just in summer. Fire pit audio, hot tub entertainment, and even heated outdoor TV enclosures mean your patio investment pays off 12 months a year, not just during grilling season.
